Greenspiration Home Application
Problem: The landscaping (or lack there of) was detracting from the beauty of the Greenspiration Home. The hill on the south and southwest corner was badly eroded. Rainwater drained into the corner from multiple sources, causing the ditch between the road and hill to deepen—washing bags of grass seed (and labor) down the drain. Mowing what little grass grew on the hill was difficult and a little dangerous.
Solution: New Garden Nursery provided a custom designed plan that would not only provide Greenspiration homeowners with a beautiful, low maintenance yard, but would one and for all eliminate drainage issues that had plagued them since moving in January 2009.
The new plan, which addressed the front and side yard of the home, would be implemented in stages to suit the owners’ budget. First priority was the badly eroded hill, which wasn’t only an eyesore, but a real maintenance problem for the owners.
In keeping with the homeowner’s desire for an environmentally friendly landscape, and also their pursuit of Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification, New Garden suggested eliminating all turf (grass) on steepest portions of the hill. An assortment of shrubs, trees, and other drought tolerant, low maintenance plants and a thick covering of mulch would take the place of the sparse grass planted on the hill.
In the problematic corner, New Garden would build a natural looking wall using the homeowner’s leftover stone from the construction of the home to help slow drainage and counter erosion. A lush rain garden, filled with rock and moisture tolerant plants and grasses, would take the place of the muddy crevice the homeowner not so affectionately referred to as the “Greenspiration Grand Canyon”.
Both the elimination of the hillside turf and the addition of the rain garden would help the owners attain points in their pursuit LEED certification for the home.
Over time, several plants would be added to the front of the home to enhance its handsome, French country façade. All of this would make an enormous difference to the overall curb appeal and value of this very special home.
